Fibre Arts- Textile Design Program

As we head into Fall 2007, many area quilters and fibre arts enthusiasts are reminded that this will be a wonderful season of study, creative endeavor and playing with new techniques as the Textile Arts program at Kingston Campus, St. Lawrence College gets underway.

The required course in the Textile Design Programme is “Textile Art - History, Diversity and Technique” with Instructor, Bethany Garner. In this course, the study of Textile Art History will become the most impressive part of your personal journey to develop a body of work, collect an inventory of resources and supplies you need for your  design and development studies and as a foundation for future collection, exhibition and perhaps sale of your own textile art. Designed to support both the traditional and contemporary fibre artist and quilter, this course will provide a guide for individual as well as interactive study and resource development to support current and future design work in your chosen area of interest. Come  explore American and European coverlets, quilts and needlework, and ethnographic textiles with strengths in South and Southeastern Asia, Latin America and particularly India. Learn how Impressionist Art and African and Japanese textiles continue to influence our current Fibre Art and Traditional Quilt trends. The course studies may lead to concentration on one particular technique as a focus, or study and exploration in several areas of interest as you develop one or more small pieces of fibre or a small quilt which will be shared as your final Textile Art History course submission.  A $30 workbook and materials fee is payable to the Instructor.  ARTS 136 841 begins on Thursday evening, September 13th, 6:30-9:30 pm in Room 12050, Upper Level in the LINK Hallway, Administration Wing. Contact Bethany at 613-376-6150 or garner@kingston.net for more information. Registration begins August 13th.

On Tuesday evenings beginning September 18th, students may also choose to attend the SILK PAINTING course to be presented by renowned Fibre Artist Hilary Scanlon and her team-Instructor Christina Barnes...this will be an exciting opportunity for 12 weeks of concentrated exploration of technique and practice of the many specialized skills utilized in the art of silk painting. Please consider this as a wonderful opportunity to advance your skills in the Textile Arts. Please see the St. Lawrence Fall Catalogue online at www.sl.on.ca for full details. (Note: this course is not a required component in the Textile Design Diploma programme but certainly a great interest course!). Register for ARTS 83 841, Tuesday evenings, Sept 18-Dec. 4, 6:30-9:30 pm
